My buddy Marcus over at The Onion's AV Club sent me a pic of Kevin Barnes in their office the day they recorded this. Of course I was jealous, but luckily was seeing them at the Vic that night! Yay!

Quiet Time
I know, I've been quiet lately. A 2 week illness and a 2 week work project will do that to you. Here's what was missed:
-GORILLAZ. (Tankboy can die happy.)
-I made the executive decision to skip Mizzou Homecoming (which will never happen again) along with an of Montreal show in STL that would have made for one hell of a weekend.
Tonight? Sleigh Bells @ Metro. Let's hope they're as loud as they're meant to be.

Saw mah favorite band, of Montreal, at the Riv on Saturday. After a disappointing previous album and tour, Kevin Barnes is back. Check out my full review on Gapers Block.

New oM Video
Here is the new of Montreal video for "Coquet Coquette."

Surprise! oM Adds Chicago Date
Saying I was incredibly upset that of Montreal didn't have a Chicago date on their upcoming False Priest tour would be an understatement. I was trying to finagle a trip to one of the shows in St. Louis, Milwaukee, and even Urbana to coencide with other plans.
Well now there is no need! Yesterday The Reader's Early Warnings email alerted me that oM will be playing at Riviera Theater on 9/25! Now, the Riv isn't one of my favorite places to see a show, BUT one perk is that the show is on a Saturday (instead of a Monday like the last one, ugh).
And hey, there's no saying I won't still hit up that show at The Pageant in St. Louis...

I'm A Geek

I just pre-ordered of Montreal's new album False Priest on 2xLP because it comes in red vinyl that is limited to 2000 copies. I am a nerd. I was already looking forward to the release, but I think what pushed me over the edge was an email that Tankboy just got from their publicist gushing about how good and different this album is. Hey, it's only 20 bucks and it comes with tons of free stickers when you pre-order (NERD!). Oh look, there's even a countdown clock on the album download page: only 66d : 12h : 10m until it's available for download. Sheesh.
If you want a preview, you can download the first single "Coquet Coquette" for free right now on Polyvinyl's website.

Lolla Aftershows Announced Today

The first Lollapalooza aftershow I went to was of Montreal (a band I had barely heard of at the time) @ Schubas in '06. Things have changed quite a bit since then. At the time, aftershows seemed a bit of an after thought, with just a few announced just a few weeks before the festival. This year there are 21 official pre-parties and aftershows with even bigger headliners than before. The Black Keys @ Metro? Phoenix @ House of Blues? You can bet you'll find me there, even if you don't find me at the festival.

Happy Anniversary Blue Note! (And other awesome Wednesday goings ons)
Tonight is the free, outdoor of Montreal concert in CoMo that I will not be attending. There are not enough sadfaces in the world. Why did it have to be on a WEDNESDAY?! Why couldn't Columbia have been this awesome when I lived there?!Okay, enough whining (besides, I'll be at the LCD Soundsystem show at Metro tonight anyway!). The show is a part of 9th Street Summerfest presented by The Blue Note who is celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year! Congratulations Blue Note!
Plus it's Wednesday, so that means I'm DJing Sweet Treat @ Beauty Bar from 7-10 (well, 9:30 tonight since I have to take off early to cover LCD). Come by for a drink and a manicure before the show! (and maybe give me a ride to Metro?)

Swimming in Music

Last night made me happy. Nice show at a good venue. I reviewed last night's French Kicks show for Gapers Block, which you can read here.
Tonight, another band that makes me happy, Peter Bjorn and John! And wouldn't you know it, I wrote a preview about their show you can read here. Also be on the lookout for my review of opening band Chairlift coming in the next couple days to Gapers Block.
There is even more music to come! This weekend I will be out of town, but I managed to work another concert in there: old fave of Montreal @ The Blue Note in my alma mater town, Columbia, MO. Drop me a line if you're going to be there! Next week is just as busy music-wise, so there will be much more news then! Have a good weekend everyone!

Yo Yo!
Something I need to add to my DVR list: Yo Gabba Gabba. Yes it is a children's program on Nickelodeon, but besides having some of the best musical guests (The Roots, The Ting Tings, Of Montreal, The Shins, Chromeo, Ladytron, MGMT, Mates Of State, Datarock, Hot Hot Heat, Jimmy Eat World, and Mixmaster Mike*), the show (and website**) seems like it is actually a kids show made for adults! I mean the “host” is a DJ for cyrin-out-loud! And his name is DJ Lance Rock. When you get home from a night out, it’s the perfect thing to throw on the tube and watch with some popcorn. (Microwave foods only kids, no stove, after an evening of drinking--safety first! Hey, they should do a song about that on the show!)
And now, for your viewing enjoyment, here’s Chromeo to tell you about the importance of washing your hands…
*I don’t even think that’s a complete list
**Seriously, click on the link, it’s awesome.

Kevin Barnes has offically gone off the deep end...

Spin warned us. Stereogum gave us our first glimpse. And now they are freaking everywhere. Everyone is talking about the ridiculousness of this new of Montreal stage show (I guess singing from atop white horse - in shorty shorts - on stage in New York City will do that.)
I for one can not wait to see it. Their shows have always been a spectacle, but this is above and beyond. Luckily I’ll be seeing them twice! First in St. Louis (10/24 @ The Pageant) and then back in Chicago (10/27 @ The Riviera).
Find all their remaining tour dates here.

New PBJ Out, oM Release Pushed Back
The new Peter Bjorn and John album Seaside Rock came out yesterday, and while it is a unique collection of instrumental songs and monologues, as a whole it doesn’t blow me away quite as much as the first single did. Still worth a listen though.
In other album release news, of Montreal has pushed back their Skeletal Lamping release date from October 7 to October 21. Guess all those "different iterations" turned out to be a little more to handle than they anticipated! They have been busy though, find them this fall in a Spin feature and gracing the cover of Paste Magazine. Oh, and then there's this...

Skeletal Lamping Leaked
of Montreal’s latest album, Skeletal Lamping (set to be officially released October 17 on Polyvinyl) leaked on the internet last week. Stereogum and Pitchfork must have already got their hands on it: Stereogum already did a “premature evaluation” of the album, Pitchfork posted a new track, I even heard an unreleased track on an internet indie station. I’ve been listening to it non-stop for the last three days and its fantastic.
It starts and ends with a bang. "Nonpariel Of Favor" starts immediately with a hectic hyper fast beat. There are a couple slower, quieter songs in the mix ("Touched Somethings Hollow" and the slightly creepy "Women’s Studies Victims") to give you a little break from the party so your head doesn’t explode. The closing track and first single released off the album, "Id Engager", honestly didn’t give me much to be excited about, of course it was fun and dancy, but luckily isn’t representative of the rest of the album.
The album appears to continue on the manic trip that we were introduced to at the end of Hissing Fauna where Kevin Barnes alluded to his freaky desires, but never went this explicit. No more ironic depression set to bouncy pop tunes, here are the times of slinky yet still bouncy tunes with a sexual undertone. Okay, make that overtly sexual. Lyrically, it sounds like of Montreal has grown from a fantasy loving child to a horned up adolescent. With lyrics like “We can do it softcore if you want, but you should know I take it both ways,” “I want to make you come 200 times a day,” “ejaculate till its no longer fun,” “I wanna be with you my pleasure puss, I wanna know what its like to be inside you / I wanna know how it feels,” I think I’m blushing. And there are a lot more innuendos where those came from, half of which I probably haven’t even noticed yet!
Skeletal Lamping will be available for purchase in many different packaging formats: “CD, LP, T-shirt, tote bag, button set, paper lantern, and wall decal set. Each item in the Skeletal Lamping Collection includes both the digital album and its unique packaging of the album art.” A creative way to still profit in this new age of file sharing.
